Electric Vehicle Fuel Savings Calculator
Thinking about switching to an electric vehicle? Our Electric Vehicle Fuel Savings Calculator helps you see exactly how much you could save on fuel costs by making the switch. Simply compare your current gas or petrol vehicle with an EV side‑by‑side, and the calculator instantly shows your monthly and yearly savings.
Tool Overview
This calculator helps you compare the annual fuel costs of a traditional vehicle versus an electric vehicle (EV). It features two main tabs at the top:
EV vs Gas (Compares Electric Vehicle with a Gasoline car)
EV vs Petrol (Compares Electric Vehicle with a Petrol car)
Both tabs work identically, only the terminology changes (“Gas” vs “Petrol”).
How to Use the Calculator
The calculator updates live – results change automatically as you adjust any input.
Step 1: Select Your Comparison Tab
At the top of the calculator, choose which comparison you want to make:
EV vs Gas – Compare an Electric Vehicle with a traditional Gasoline car (US/Canada terminology)
EV vs Petrol – Compare an Electric Vehicle with a Petrol car (UK/Europe/Asia terminology)
Step 2: Set Your Basic Preferences
Using the toggle buttons:
Distance Unit: Select Miles or Kilometers
Fuel Volume: Select Gallons or Liters (price will update to /gallonor/gallonor/liter)
Step 3: Enter Your Annual Driving Distance
The calculator computes your annual driving distance based on a typical week:
Weekday daily distance: Enter miles (or km) driven on an average weekday (Monday to Friday). Automatically calculated as:
(weekday × 5 × 52)Weekend daily distance: Enter miles (or km) driven on an average weekend day (Saturday & Sunday). Automatically calculated as:
(weekend × 2 × 52)The Calculated Annual Driving Distance appears below these inputs.
Step 4: Enter Your Vehicle & Energy Parameters
For the Gas/Petrol Vehicle (left column):
Gas/Petrol vehicle fuel economy: Enter your car’s fuel efficiency in MPG (miles per gallon) or equivalent
Gasoline/Petrol price: Enter current fuel price in **/gallon∗∗(or/gallon∗∗(or/liter)
For the Electric Vehicle (EV) (right column):
EV energy efficiency: Enter the EV’s efficiency in kWh/100mi (kilowatt-hours per 100 miles)
Electricity rate: Enter local electricity price in ¢/kWh (cents per kilowatt-hour)
Understanding the Results
The calculator instantly displays:
| Result | Description |
|---|---|
| Monthly savings | Money saved per month by driving an EV |
| Yearly savings | Total savings per year by driving an EV |
| Annual fuel cost | Estimated yearly fuel cost for Gas/Petrol vehicle |
| Annual electricity cost | Estimated yearly electricity cost for the EV |
| Annual savings | Difference between fuel cost and electricity cost |
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Live updates | Results change instantly as you adjust any input |
| Two comparison modes | EV vs Gas (US) and EV vs Petrol (international) |
| Unit flexibility | Supports miles/km and gallons/liters |
| Automatic distance calculation | Based on weekday and weekend driving patterns |
Example Scenario
Using the default values shown in the calculator:
EV vs Gas Tab:
Annual Driving Distance: 13,520 miles
Monthly Savings: $104.10
Yearly Savings: $1,249.25
EV vs Petrol Tab:
Annual Driving Distance: 13,520 miles
Monthly Savings: $115.37
Yearly Savings: $1,384.45
The difference between the two tabs reflects the different default fuel prices and efficiency assumptions for gasoline versus petrol vehicles.
